Our tendency to put profit over people by ignoring safety codes makes disasters worse. Just last September there was a “damning report” on the terrible fire at Grenfell Tower in London in 2017 that found multiple reasons for the disaster including dishonest companies, weak or incompetent regulators and complacent government which allowed the building to be covered in a combustible material. The conclusion of the inquiry was that this should never have happened. Safety warnings had been ignored because of a commitment to deregulation.
